iPhone 6 release date 2014: features, price, pre-orders and more

Apple's iPhone 6 release date is expected in late September 2014. But first, industry and consumer eyes will be on Tuesday's product unveiling event, scheduled for noon CDT (10 a.m. PDT).

Apple is expected to reveal at the special event tomorrow its much-anticipated iPhone 6, likely to come in two larger-than-before models. iPhone 6 pre-orders are expected to follow later this week from the likes of AT&T, Verizon and other carriers.

Other products like the iWatch may be revealed Tuesday, as well, according to reports. But the focus will likely be on the newest iPhone 6, expected to change considerably from what consumers have known since Apple began selling smartphones in 2007, if not for one big reason alone.

Ahead of Tuesday's special event, here are 6 things to know about anticipated iPhone 6 features, price and more:

1. Bigger is better
Smartphones with screens of 5 inches or larger are growing globally at a rapid pace, yet Apple's largest screen is a current 4-inch iPhone.
According to new reports, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may be called the "iPhone 6" and the "iPhone 6 Plus"

2. The price will rise
The new, larger iPhone 6 will be bigger, but it will also cost more. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple's most expensive iPhone currently is the 5S, with pricing beginning at $649. The news agency cited analysts who said the largest iPhone 6 will likely cost $100 more – with pricing starting at $749

3. iPhone 6 pre-orders may begin this week
Pre-orders may begin as soon as Friday, with initial deliveries in late September or perhaps early October.
"Apple likes to announce new iPhones on Tuesdays, make new iOS updates available to download on Wednesdays and, depending on availability, start selling or taking pre-orders for new devices on Fridays,"reported TechRadar

4. iOS 8 release date coming soon – maybe Sept. 10
Apple's new operating system – iOS 8 – will likely be an important part of Tuesday's special event demonstration, with a release expected soon thereafter.
So get ready to download this week if you already have an existing iPhone.
Apple claims iOS 8 will be, "Huge for developers. Massive for everyone else." Additions expected include new keyboard options, and "more ways to share content."
The keyboard, "even recognizes to whom you're typing and whether you're in Mail or Messages," Apple says. "Because your tone in an email may be different from your tone in a message."

5. Apple's app world will get bigger and better
"With the iPhone 6's bigger screens, faster speeds, NFC, and better sensors, it is rational to expect significantly more utility from a broad variety of apps," said industry analyst Ben Schachter, of Macquarie. "And given that Apple was able to sell $10 billion of apps in 2013, 75 percent plus of which were relatively simple games on relatively small screens, we think the new hardware and sensors will enable much better software..."

6. 128-gigabyte of storage option and a better battery
Talk had been for some time that Apple's new iPhone 6 models might feature a sturdy sapphire display cover. While the public won't know for sure until Cook does the unveiling Tuesday, that notion has been widely dismissed by most observers – at least for both new models; one, perhaps.
But one analyst isn't alone in thinking the biggest iPhone addition besides size may be the option of 128GB of storage.
Ming-Chi Kuok of KGI Securities said he expects both the 4.7 and the 5.5-inch iPhones to offer 128GB versions, according to Apple Insider.

The consensus from all pre-reveal conjecture is that the new iPhone will have a notable battery boost. Battery power is consistently an issue with smartphones, and the iPhone is not immune. The company doesn't release a new version without boosting battery power, and the iPhone 6 will reportedly have battery power lasting 15 percent longer
